Give with Ma Durga’s 10 hands to those who have lost their livelihoods

The idol makers are sitting idle. The pandal builders have little work. The festive light decorators are unemployed. And band players are not beating their drums. This year, with gatherings disallowed to stop the spread of coronavirus, the annual Puja grandeur is missing and festivities are subdued.

It seems the goddess Durga has another battle to fight - against the suffering that the pandemic has inflicted on wage earners who eagerly wait all year to celebrate her victory of good over evil.

Take potter Mritunjoy Bairagi, a resident of East Medinipur district of West Bengal. Every year he goes to Kolkata’s famous Kumartuli to make clay idols of the various gods and goddesses including Durga, Kali, Ganesh and Saraswati. But this year, with no work since the lockdown, he is back in his village and dependent on the Public Distribution System or on local NGOs to feed his family.

Make giving to out-of-work daily wagers like Mritunjoy your celebration of Durga Puja this year - and help the goddess win her war against the cruelty of hunger and suffering. Bless you!
